Prevention is the Best Cure

Nobody wants to get injured, but kids will be kids and even adults will not always act so responsibly.  But one doesn’t have to give up on fun; just be prepared before engaging in potentially dangerous activities.  A 3 year old boy should be learning the word ‘bike’ and ‘helmet’ in the same breath.  Time and again research has proven that a bike accident that occurs while wearing a helmet will cause significantly less damage to the rider.
These are facts that Alan Quasha, Chair of the Brain Trauma Foundation, seeks to make people very aware of.  Founded in 1986, the Foundation has focused on researching traumatic brain injury and improving the outcome for its victims.  But it will always be stressed that prevention is the best cure.  Education is key.  As the responsible adult, ensure the bike your child is using is the right size for him or her, and try on a few helmets to ensure it has the perfect fit.  It is actually more dangerous for one to wear a poorly-fitted helmet than no helmet at all.
This Foundation that Alan Quasha chairs, has over the years, developed and revised a set of guidelines to manage severe brain trauma injury and has found that if these were followed, a 50% decrease in fatalities, as well as savings of over $260m a year in medical costs, would ensue.
